Whoop 4.0 Review: Features and Functionalities

Whoop 4.0 is a fitness tracker known for its various overall health monitoring capabilities, including tracking sleep, activities, strain, stress, and recovery. Let’s break down all of them one by one.

Fitness Tracking

Monitoring activities is one of the many things that make Whoop 4.0 stand out in the sea of fitness trackers. As a fitness tracker, you can expect nothing less from the wearable. Whoop 4.0, in fact, returns pretty accurate data, closely mirroring the data my Oura Ring and Apple Watch SE 2 collected. With its adjustable band design, you can wear it on your arms, arms, or even ankles—wherever is more comfortable for you during activities.

Of course, Whoop 4.0 is not a complete fitness tracker without automatic activity detection. Its automatic activity detection can automatically track over 60 activities, including strength training, powerlifting, HIIT, yoga, pilates, triathlon, skateboarding, and diving. Whoop takes the cue from periods of continuous elevated heart rate (15 minutes) and higher-than-average movements (or what it calls Strain) to detect these activities as well as the time when you are active or working out.

Sleep Monitoring

Whoop 4.0 records all the basic sleep metrics, including sleep stages (deep, REM, light, and awake), sleep duration, sleep/wake-up time, and resting heart rate. It will come up with a sleep score based on these and other factors like recent strain and sleep debt.

Whoop 4.0 Sleep Monitoring
Whoop 4.0 sleep monitoring data

There are two important things you need to remember about its sleep monitoring. Firstly, it only logs sleep longer than 1 hour and classifies it as sleep or a nap accordingly based on the time it occurs. When you have a shifting sleep schedule, this could become a big concern for you like it is for me. Secondly, the one thing that makes me think twice about using Whoop 4.0 for sleep monitoring is its band design, which can be a tad bit uncomfortable and restricting.

Strain, Recovery, and Stress Monitoring

If there’s one thing that has always stood out with Whoop 4.0 is strain monitoring. In an effort to look at fitness in a holistic manner, Whoop takes strain and recovery into consideration.

Whoop 4.0 looks into ambient temperature to sense body temperature, which is a primary factor when the body is under strain or stress. Truth be told, ambient temperature can get too far off from the actual body temperature, thereby affecting your strain, recovery, and stress scores. This is where electrodermal activity (EDA) comes in, helping you get a more accurate read on your strain, recovery, and stress.

Whoop 4.0 Recovery Monitoring
Whoop 4.0 recovery monitoring data

While strain and stress monitoring is highly dependent on workouts, work, errands, and other activities, recovery looks at your heart rate variability (HRV) and sleep quality more than anything else.

Whoop 4.0 Review: Specs and Design

Whoop 4.0 Review
Special edition Whoop 4.0 variants

Whoop 4.0 has four times the number of photodiodes on the sensor and five LEDs that use green, red, and infrared light for gathering various data points. It’s certified to IP68 standards, so it’s waterproof up to 10 meters. And its battery can last up to 5 days.

In terms of design, Whoop 4.0 is pretty much like any fitness tracker except it does not have a display. For people who want to focus on their workouts and sleep, this is quite a nifty feature. Whoop is lightweight to carry too.

The band design—which comes in more than 20 different styles—allows you to wear it on your wrist, forearm, upper arm, or even ankle. If you are using gloves at the gym like me, this versatility is a life-saver.

Ultrahuman vs. Whoop Review
Choosing between Ultrahuman and Whoop depends on your needs.

Confused what’s the difference between Ultrahuman Ring Air and Whoop 4.0? This might be an unlikely comparison, but these devices actually share a lot in common. In this Ultrahuman vs. Whoop review, we will shed light on the good, the bad, and the ugly.

Ultrahuman is an Indian health tech company that released the Ultrahuman Ring Air in September 2023. Although controversial (they’re being sued by Oura), Ultrahuman Ring Air is one of the best smart rings on the market right now.

Whoop is an American health tech firm based in Boston, Massachusetts. Its fourth-generation fitness tracker was released in 2021. Despite that, Whoop 4.0 is still one of the most popular fitness trackers in fitness circles.

Ultrahuman vs. Whoop Review: Features and Functionalities

Ultrahuman Ring Air vs. Whoop 4.0
Ultrahuman Ring Air (left) and Whoop 4.0 (right) have almost the same set of health functionalities.

Sleep Monitoring

Both wearables have an impressive sleep tracking functionality, monitoring metrics like sleep stages (light, REM, and deep sleep), sleep duration, resting heart rate, and blood oxygen. Based on these and a few other factors, Whoop and Ultrahuman can come up with sleep scores to evaluate how good your sleep is.

Whoop 4.0 also takes recent strain and sleep debt into account when calculating the sleep score, so you get a holistic view of your sleep habits. In addition, Whoop only logs sleep longer than 1 hour. Anything less than that is considered a nap, depending on the time of day it occurs.

Ultrahuman Ring Air looks at your circadian rhythm diet and meal timing as a major factor for your sleep and strain, so it’s not just physical exercise and light exposure they are considering.

ALSO READ: ULTRAHUMAN RING AIR VS. OURA RING REVIEW: WHICH IS BETTER?

Activity Tracking

When it comes to monitoring different activities and workouts, Ultrahuman Ring Air and Whoop 4.0 have a robust fitness tracking mechanism.

Ultrahuman Ring Air uses a 6-axis accelerometer to track metrics like steps, duration, active hours, and calorie burn. Its movement index is designed to keep users moving to maximize glucose metabolism. If you use the MyFitnessPal app like me, Ultrahuman supports it along with several others.

Meanwhile, Whoop 4.0 can automatically track over 60 activities, including strength training, powerlifting, HIIT, yoga, triathlon, and diving. But one thing about Whoop 4.0 that makes it a better fitness tracker is its versatile band design, which you can use on your wrist, arms, or even ankle. With Ultrhuman Ring Air, it’s difficult to bring it to the gym and lift heavy weights as you can really feel the metal pressing against your skin.

ALSO READ: RINGCONN VS. ULTRAHUMAN RING AIR: WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE?

Heart Rate Monitoring

Another significant health metric is heart rate tracking. Heart rates are the core metrics used for monitoring sleep, recovery, activity, and stress and strain in the case of Whoop. Both devices have PPG sensors that track resting heart rate (used during sleep), heart rate variability (used for recovery monitoring), and active/live/workout heart rate (used during workouts).

Aside from these health metrics, Ultrahuman Ring Air and Whoop 4.0 can also track recovery, monitoring, blood oxygen saturation (Sp02), and period prediction capabilities. Both Ultrahuman Ring Air and Whoop 4.0 also use a temperature sensor to track body temperature, which is used for recovery monitoring, sleep tracking, and period prediction.

The Outliers

One thing that makes Whoop 4.0 a standout in the wearable tech market is its strain monitoring capabilities, giving users a deeper look into their activities and how their body is impacted. Whoop’s strain monitoring is based on both cardiovascular and muscular exertion, which is monitored based on the person’s heart rate, movements as well as weights, reps, and sets used. If you are a fitness enthusiast, this aspect comes in very handy.

On the other hand, Ultrahuman Ring Air has a continuous glucose monitoring capability for keeping tabs on your blood sugar. No other wearable on the market has a blood sugar monitoring feature. If you are a diabetic or come from a family of one, this is a nifty functionality.

Do note that Ultrahuman Ring Air does not have a dedicated feature for stress management unlike Whoop 4.0.

Ultrahuman vs. Whoop Review: Specs and Design

Ultrahuman Ring Air is made of titanium body and coated in tungsten carbide carbon, while the inner shell is coated with hypoallergenic epoxy resin. The ring weighs 2.4-3.6 grams, depending on the ring size.

Its battery can last up to 6 days and each full charge can take about 2 hours to complete. In terms of water protection, it’s certified to IP68 standards and it’s water-resistant up to 100 meters.

Whoop 4.0 can last up to 5 days and it’s certified to IP68 standards. It’s waterproof up to 10 meters.

Ultrahuman makes sense if you wish to have a wearable that can track sleep, activities, heart rate, blood oxygen, and most especially blood sugar.

Searching for the best fitness trackers and smart bands? Check out our top picks for the 5 Best Fitness Trackers in 2023!

Despite the wild popularity of smartwatches in the past few years, fitness trackers and smart bands remain in demand, big thanks to their cost-effectiveness. These wearables may not be as sophisticated as smartwatches, but they are the top choice for people looking for a reliable activity-tracking device that does not break the bank.

Fitness trackers usually house accelerometers for tracking movements, GPS for monitoring location, optical heart rate sensors, galvanic skin response sensors for temperature sensing, ambient light sensors, and a thermometer, among others. All of these are packed in a tiny case and marketed for typically less than $200. Talk about the robust health management features you get for gas money.

Indeed, fitness trackers and smart bands are a great alternative to smartwatches if you are looking for a lighter and less obtrusive wearable, not to mention more affordable. Here’s our list of the 5 Best Fitness Trackers:

Fitbit Charge 5

It’s been a little more than 2 years since Fitbit unveiled the Charge 5, one of the most popular fitness trackers available. And finally, Google’s wearable tech arm has already confirmed the launch of its latest fitness tracker offering, the Fitbit Charge 6, before the month ends.

While we don’t expect tons of crazy changes from its predecessor, we are 100% positive that Fitbit is bringing in something different this time that fitness enthusiasts will love. If you are looking forward to the Fitbit Charge 6, here’s everything you need to know about the device so far—from the specs and features down to the design and pricing.

Fitbit Charge 6 Specs and Features

One of the biggest upgrades expected to arrive is the continuous electrodermal activity (cEDA) sensor, which is mainly used for stress monitoring. The Charge 5 has an EDA sensor, but it only does manual spot readings.

It’s worth noting that the cEDA sensor drains the battery of some of Fitbit’s smartwatches, like the Sense 2, so we can expect that the company is doing something to improve the battery of the Charge 6.

Another exciting feature to expect is the return of a physical button on the right edge, enabling you to control your watch as you move. This could be used for several tasks, such as stopping/resuming a workout or pausing/resuming music. The Charge 6 is also expected to incorporate Google apps and services such as Google Maps and YouTube Music.

Charge 6 will also come with other standard health and fitness functionalities, including heart rate monitoring, sleep tracking, and blood oxygen saturation monitoring. Fitbit is also expected to retain the contactless payment feature of Charge 5 and GPS.

When it comes to design, nothing spectacular is coming as the Charge 6 is expected to be a spitting image of the Charge 5. According to reports, the upcoming fitness tracker will get the same curved glass facade and brighter AMOLED screen display. Charge 5 has a 1.04-inch AMOLED display with 450 nits brightness and always-on capability. Charge 6 is expected to retain this or get a little upgrade in the brightness department. The battery life is expected to last for up to 7 days and it takes 2 hours to charge completely.

Fitbit Charge 6 has been announced to cost $160, which is cheaper upon release compared to its predecessor. For context, the Fitbit Charge 5 was priced at $179 when it came out. Available color options are black, beige, and pink. Fitbit has already confirmed the September 28 launch date through the video teaser it released on X (Twitter).
