A Garmin smart ring could be in the pipeline and will soon be available, according to reports. Although we have not heard from Garmin as of yet regarding the release of a new line of wearables on top of its popular smartwatches and fitness trackers, it is most likely that the health tech maker has been gearing up for the release of its smart ring.

According to reports, a Garmin smart ring might have a constellation of sensors for monitoring sleep, activities, heart rate, body temperature, and more. Stress and recovery monitoring could also be a huge part of this new smart ring, which is pretty much what smart rings on the market can do, so it’s not a surprise that Garmin will follow suit. These basic functionalities

Industry leaders like the Oura Ring, Ultrahuman Ring Air, and Ringconn have almost the same set of functionalities and sensors, but the execution and insights have been different. It’s safe to say that Garmin may have the same features as the smart ring market leaders.

Ultrahuman Ring Air - Best Smart Rings
Ultrahuman Ring Air is the best smart ring for overall health monitoring.

If Garmin releases smart rings, fitness enthusiasts will have a device that compliments smartwatches well. Smart rings are better than smartwatches in some aspects, especially when it comes to accuracy and focus, so it only makes sense for the company to make sure users have options to augment their health data through the smart ring.

Some believe Garmin might not be treading the smart ring market stating that it’s too niche. But this statement could be a bit of a stretch as the company ventured into sports watches years ago when it was considered a niche but health-tracking smartwatches have now become the standard for general use.

Whether it’s the ring form factor, the price, or the functionalities you’re not excited about, no need to worry because the market has several alternatives to Oura Ring.

Choosing the Best Alternative to Oura

Before diving into the list, we looked into a few things to help us justify what makes a wearable device a great alternative to the Oura Ring. This list is not limited to smart rings. Garmin Vivoactive 5 vs. Oura Ring
Garmin Vivoactive 5 and Oura Ring are two popular health tracking wearables.

Are you looking for an up-to-the-mark smart device that has helpful health-tracking capabilities? Well, you don’t have to search far and wide anymore, as we present two of the best wearables that are transcending boundaries not just in terms of sleep tracking.

First is the Garmin Vivoactive 5. This smartwatch is from Garmin, an American but Swiss-domiciled multinational technology company founded during the 1980s. With its advanced health and fitness features, Garmin Vivoactive 5 is more than just a smartwatch but your on-wrist personal coach guiding you toward your fitness goals.

Second is the Oura Ring. Not a smartwatch, but a smart ring. It comes from Oura, this time a health technology company in Finland. This smart ring basically tracks sleep and physical activity, but it can definitely do more. Without further ado, let’s head to the comparison of these two devices.

Garmin Vivoactive 5 vs. Oura Ring: Features and Functionalities

In this section, you will learn about the differences between Garmin Vivoactive 5 and the Oura Ring based on their sleep tracking, fitness tracking, heart rate monitoring, and blood oxygen monitoring capabilities.

Garmin Vivoactive 5 vs. Oura Ring Review
Garmin Vivoactive 5 or Oura Ring–which one should you choose?

Sleep Tracking

Many people love Garmin Vivoactive 5 for how it does perfectly well when tracking your sleep. First, with this smartwatch, you get a sleep score and even a “personal coach” for how much sleep you need and how else you can improve. The watch keeps track of various sleep stages – even naps! – then provide several key metrics over your sleep period. This way, you can understand your health better.

But wait, there’s more. As soon as you wake up in the morning, this smartwatch provides you with an overview of your sleep. Take it as its sleep morning report for you. But how about the Oura Ring? Can it top that stuff?

Interestingly, the Oura Ring has roughly the same features when it comes to sleep tracking. As you close your eyes and prepare to doze up, this smart ring prepares to track your entire sleep. Also, in the morning, as you wake up, the ring presents in-depth data showing how long you spent in each stage of your sleep, including a Sleep Score to let you know how well you slept.

Fitness Tracking

Garmin Vivoactive 5 and the Oura Ring generally do the same regarding sleep tracking, but how about their fitness tracking capabilities? Let’s start with the former.

Garmin’s smartwatch can track your every move with more than 30 preloaded GPS and indoor sports apps, whether you are walking, cycling, running, or swimming in the pool. Plus, persons with disabilities can also track their movement as the watch also has a system that tracks wheelchair activities.

The Oura Ring also tracks all the movements of its wearer, as well as presents an activity score to ensure they balance their activities, inactivities, and rest periods. Both devices help the wearer ensure they take enough time to recover and transition into another fitness challenge.

Heart Rate Monitoring

How about in terms of heart rate monitoring? Garmin devices, such as its Vivoactive 5, offer all-day insights based on heart monitoring data through the Garmin Elevate heart rate technology sensor. This is an optical PPG sensor (photoplethysmography, an optical measurement method for heart rate monitoring purposes) built into the back of the smartwatch. It detects the person’s heart rate by shining a green light through their skin, which the red cells in the blood vessels in their skin reflect.

The Oura Ring also does heart rate monitoring with a PPG sensor like how Garmin Vivoactive does it, only that it detects your heart rate from your hands and fingers, or where the ring is worn.

The smart ring detects changes in your blood pulse volume via the infrared PPG sensors located within the device, as every time your heart beats, blood is pumped out into the arteries in your hands and fingers.

Blood Oxygen Monitoring

Interestingly, both Garmin Vivoactive 5 and the Oura Ring generally do it the same way when it comes to monitoring your blood oxygen: through infrared lights.

For instance, the Vivoactive 5 watch has a wrist-based pulse oximeter that gauges your blood’s oxygen saturation. Plus, it tracks this blood oxygen saturation all day, whether you are awake or asleep.

Almost similarly, the Oura Ring measures peripheral oxygen saturation levels in its wearer’s blood by sending light coming from this device’s red and infrared LEDs into their finger. It does this while you are asleep. Then, it measures the amount of light reflected.

Garmin Vivoactive 5 vs. Oura Ring: Specs and Design

This section will tackle the major differences between the Garmin Vivoactive 5 and the Oura Ring in terms of design, battery life, and water protection.

Design

When it comes to their designs, the Garmin Vivoactive 5 and the Oura Ring are obviously different animals. One is worn around the wrist, while the other is way smaller, worn around the finger.

Garmin Vivoactive 5 primarily has a 1.2-inch AMOLED display and runs a 390 by 390 resolution. Furthermore, its body is crafted from fiber-reinforced polymer. Its display’s bezel, meanwhile, is made from anodized aluminum, which protects it from scratches and scuffs. Gorilla Glass 3 protects its screen.

On the other hand, smart rings from Oura are made from titanium, alongside its non-metallic inner section. Its size is 7.9 millimeters across and 2.55 millimeters thick. Its weight varies between four and six grams. Unlike Vivoactive 5, the Oura Ring does not have a display, but you can access the data via its partner app.

Water Protection

Garmin Vivoactive 5’s water protection is 5 ATM and up to 50 meters. The device can resist the penetration of water, like powerful water jets, but it should not be submerged in water for so long.

On the other hand, the water-resistant rating of the Oura Ring is 10 ATM. You can wear this ring while showering, swimming, or snorkeling, but not when you will go diving.

The Verdict: Which Is the Best Device for Sleep Tracking?

What’s interesting about Garmin Vivoactive 5 and the Oura Ring is that they generally do the same in various pointers, such as sleep tracking, heart rate monitoring, and blood oxygen monitoring. For instance, both the smartwatch and the smart ring use PPG sensors for monitoring your heart rate, and they also both use infrared lights for monitoring your blood oxygen.

So, to answer the question of which is the best device for sleep tracking, the choice is either of the two, actually, if you are after this feature. But, concerning battery life and water protection, the two outshine each other.

Wondering which device is better for sleep tracking? In this Oura vs. Garmin Venu 3 review, we compare these wearables, mainly on the features and functionalities front so you have an idea which device fits your needs.

Technology has traveled a long way in terms of how it can improve people’s lives. You’ve got the likes of robot vacuums that make cleaning a total breeze, air fryers for cooking delicious meals minus the stress, and, of course, smartwatches and smart rings.

A smartwatch, as its name implies, is a wearable computer in the form of a watch. Similar to a standard watch, it can tell time, but it is so much different because of its other functions, such as fitness and sleep tracking. On the other hand, smart rings are designed to fit around a finger like a traditional ring, but can offer features such as mobile payments and health tracking.

Two of the trendiest wearables today are the Oura Ring and Garmin Venu 3. The Oura Ring is a smart ring that uses sensors to track various health metrics, from fitness to sleep. Meanwhile, Garmin Venu 3 is one of the smartwatches in the catalog of this Swiss technology brand, purpose-built with the most advanced health and fitness features, and designed to make calls and send texts as well.

This discussion shall guide you on which of the two is better in terms of their sleep-tracking capabilities, in particular. So, let’s get started with the comparison, beginning with their features and functionalities.

Oura vs. Garmin Venu 3: Features and Functionalities

Sleep Tracking

Let’s start with the Oura Ring. This smart ring’s sleep tracking feature works the moment you close your eyes and gears up for sleep. The device tracks the entire time you are asleep. As you wake up, you will be presented with in-depth data showing how long you spent in each stage of sleep. You can also see your Sleep Score which gives an overview of how well you slept.

On the other hand, while Garmin Venu 3’s sleep tracking functionalities are generally the same as those of the Oura Ring, it has features not present in the latter, such as monitoring the smartwatch’s wearer’s movement during sleep. Furthermore, via the Garmin Connect app or in the watch’s settings, you can set your normal sleep hours.

Garmin Venu 3 also presents sleep statistics that include the total hours of sleep, sleep stages, sleep movement, and sleep score. It also provides a “sleep coach” that advises you on how else you can improve your sleep.

Heart Rate Monitoring

Blood Oxygen Monitoring

The Oura Ring is a champion in terms of blood oxygen monitoring. Its blood oxygen sensing feature measures peripheral oxygen saturation levels in your body by transmitting light from its red and infrared LEDs to your finger while you are asleep. Then, it measures how much light is reflected. The amount that each light reflects can tell whether you have richly or poorly oxygenated blood.

Does the Garmin Venu 3 series have functionalities for blood oxygen monitoring? Yes. Unlike other smartwatches, this watch has a wrist-based pulse oximeter to help gauge the saturation of oxygen in the wearer’s blood.

Which smartwatch is the best for activity tracking? In this guide, we selected the 5 Best Fitness Tracker Watches you can take into consideration based on your style, budget, and needs.

When it comes to activity tracking, smartwatches are the best wearable you can have to keep track of your activity progress. They have the facility to carry the most advanced sensors as well as a screen display for real-time activity tracking.

Despite the wild popularity of smartwatches in the past few years, fitness trackers and smart bands remain in demand, big thanks to their cost-effectiveness. These wearables may not be as sophisticated as smartwatches, but they are the top choice for people looking for a reliable activity-tracking device that does not break the bank.

Fitness trackers usually house accelerometers for tracking movements, GPS for monitoring location, optical heart rate sensors, galvanic skin response sensors for temperature sensing, ambient light sensors, and a thermometer, among others. All of these are packed in a tiny case and marketed for typically less than $200. Talk about the robust health management features you get for gas money.

Indeed, fitness trackers and smart bands are a great alternative to smartwatches if you are looking for a lighter and less obtrusive wearable, not to mention more affordable. Here’s our list of the 5 Best Fitness Trackers:

The post Garmin Venu 3 Review: Is It a Good Fitness and Health Wearable? first appeared on Smart Ring News.

]]>

Garmin, one of the most successful smartwatch vendors, has finally released Venu 3, the latest generation of smartwatch from the highly lauded series. How does it stack up? Is it worth upgrading from Venu S2? In this Garmin Venu 3 review, I broke down everything you need to know about this device—from features to pricing and whether or not it’s worth it. Without further ado, let’s get right into it.

Garmin Venu 3 Review: Specs

The 1.4-inch AMOLED touchscreen display is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 3 which makes it scratch-resistant and highly durable enough to survive up to a 1.2-meter drop. Its bezels are made with stainless steel, making it lightweight, while the straps are made from a silicone material. The smartwatch, including the strap, weighs 40-42 grams, depending on the variant.

Garmin Venu 3 is certified to 5 ATM standards, meaning it can withstand pressures equivalent to about 50 meters or 164 feet underwater. If you are wondering if it’s okay to use the device for swimming and snorkeling, it definitely is. It’s best to avoid diving with it, though.

The battery can last up to 14 days in smartwatch mode per single charge. This is the default mode where the smartwatch continuously tracks your activities and heart rate and sends notifications from your phone. This is pretty impressive considering most smartwatches in this mode can only survive for a day (ahem, Apple). If the always-on display is activated, the device can last up to 5 days.

The smartwatch also has a built-in speaker and microphone for taking calls and responding to text messages using your phone’s voice assistant.

Sleep Tracking

Garmin Venu 3 can automatically track your sleep from the moment you turn in to the different stages of sleep (light, deep, and REM) until you wake up. In addition, it can also monitor your heart rate variability (HRV) and blood oxygen throughout your sleep. For naps, the watch can automatically detect and log them as well. At the end of your sleep, you get a sleep score and personalized insights on how you can improve your sleep.

Activity Tracking

A core of Garmin, fitness or activity tracking is something you can rely on Venu 3. It has a pretty accurate activity tracker, keeping tabs on your steps, flights, and calorie burn. Venu 3 can also track your maximal oxygen consumption (V02 max) or the maximum amount of oxygen you can use during an intense exercise. For wheelchair users, even more impressive is that Garmin Venu 3 can track your movements.

Heart Rate Tracking

What is a fitness device without heart rate tracking? With Garmin Venu 3, you have continuous heart rate monitoring, perfect for fitness enthusiasts and people who have a heart-related disease. With it comes HRV, which is key to understanding your overall health.

Daily Health Insights

As mentioned, you get personalized health insights daily for your sleep, recovery, HRV status, daily calendar, and more. This is highly customizable based on your priorities.

There seems to be a disconnect if we compare a smart ring and a smartwatch, let alone compare a sleep ring with a multisports smartwatch. Despite that, some people can’t help but be confused about whether it’s worth getting Oura Ring 3 or Garmin Fenix 7.

In this comparison review, I will break down the difference between Oura Ring 3 and Garmin Fenix 7 and find out how each device’s common features stack up against each other. It would be a lopsided comparison if we compare the two devices as a whole. So I would like to preface this by saying that I will zero in on the health and fitness front only. Let’s get down to brass tacks and talk quickly about the devices that we are about to compare.

Garmin Fenix 7 is considered one of the most advanced smartwatches on the market. Released in January 2022, its versatility is one of its main selling points, often used for running, swimming, hiking, skiing, and cycling. Fenix 7 does have sleep tracking and recovery management capabilities as well.

Meanwhile, Oura Ring is the most advanced smart ring available with sleep tracking and recovery management as two of its core functionalities. Released in November 2021, Oura Ring 3 is the latest generation of the smart ring packed with features in such a tiny form factor. Read our Oura Ring Review!

Oura Ring 3 vs. Garmin Fenix 7: Features and Functionalities

Oura Ring 3

Activity Tracking

In terms of tracking activities, there’s a lot to love with Garmin Fenix 7. The watch provides solid data of complex sports, let alone simple activities like walking, running, and strength training. This is what sets Fenix 7 apart. Garmin Fenix 7 is specially built for people into running, cross-country skiing, hiking, climbing, cycling, surfing, swimming, and even HIIT training.

Oura Ring 3, on the other hand, still has a lot to improve when it comes to fitness tracking. If you have read any of Oura Ring reviews, you know that I’m a huge fan—except for its automatic activity detection which is a hot mess at the moment.

If you want to get serious with activity tracking, Garmin Fenix 7 is the most logical choice. It’s versatile and more well-equipped than Oura Ring 3.

Sleep Tracking

Both Oura Ring 3 and Garmin Fenix 7 have robust sleep tracking capabilities, monitoring data sleep stages (light, deep, and REM) as well detailed insights into your sleep patterns, including the time you went to bed, how long you are in bed, and tossing and turning.

Through their respective mobile apps, Oura and Garmin provide sleep scores based on the data culled from your sleep, plus factors like heart rate, heart rate variability, and body movement data. Oura and Garmin are also able to look at your respiration and blood oxygen saturation (Sp02) for a more in-depth context on your sleep quality as well as training and recovery.

While both wearables have a fairly robust sleep technology, Oura is way more comfortable to wear to sleep. It’s less bulky and less restrictive than a smartwatch.

Heart Rate Tracking

Among all health and fitness wearables, heart rate tracking is one of the most important functionalities as it’s usually the main basis of many metrics, including sleep and recovery. On top of the heart rate variability and continuous heart rate, Oura Ring 3 is capable of tracking daytime heart rate, workout heart rate, and live heart rate.

Wrist-based heart rate sensors may not be the best to track heart rate, but Garmin Fenix 7 has proven to be a practical device that delivers accurate data. However, it can get quite tricky to use the device when swimming due to limitations that come with the blockage of their sensor. Also, excessive motion can greatly impact the accuracy of the readings.

Recovery Management

Recovery management is a great addition to any health and wellness wearable. With Oura Ring 3, you get a readiness score (1-100 with 100 being the highest) through the app as you start your day. Garmin Fenix 7 is a little bit different. It doesn’t just return a readiness score after a night’s sleep but also advises a recovery time after training, whether you are ready for another hard workout.

The Outliers

With a bigger form factor, you can expect Fenix 7 to carry more functionalities. These include a preloaded map, music, preloaded activity profiles, smart notifications, and Garmin Pay, among many others. Garmin Fenix 7 also has features that are particularly helpful for certain sports and activities, such as running, cross-country skiing, hiking, climbing, cycling, surfing, swimming, and HIIT training.

Meanwhile, Oura has a more meaningful use for women. Its Period Prediction allows you to understand the changes in your menstrual cycle, giving you a five-day forecast window. Using the Natural Cycles app, the first FDA-cleared hormone-free birth control app, women can now use their Oura ring to plan or prevent pregnancy and even track menopause.

Oura Ring 3 vs. Garmin Fenix 7: Specs and Design

Garmin Fenix 7

Design

Oura Ring 3 is made from PVD-coated titanium metal, designed to withstand extreme conditions. Its body is slender enough to be comfortable and good-looking enough to look like a piece of fashion statement. Garmin Fenix 7 is available in various displays—42 mm, 47 mm, and 51 mm. So you have options whether you want to have a smaller or bulkier watch display. The smartwatch has a bunch of different buttons with different functions, so keep that in mind.

Battery Life

Garmin Fenix 7 has an internal, rechargeable lithium battery that provides up to 18 days of battery life in smartwatch mode, 57 hours in GPS mode, and up to 57 days in battery-saver mode. The solar variants can give you a battery boost from the sunlight, so you can go longer between charges. Meanwhile, Oura Ring 3 can last up to 7 days.

Protection

Both Garmin Fenix 7 and Oura Ring 3 are classified with 10 ATM protection, which means you can submerge the smart ring up to 100 meters down the water for about an hour. Made from a fiber-reinforced polymer case, Fenix 7 is designed to survive military standards for thermal and shock as well.

Comfort

Before Oura delivers your ring, you will get a sizing kit with sizes from 6-13 millimeters. It is highly recommended to test out your chosen size for at least 24 hours to ensure you have the best-fitting size possible. Regardless, for me, it took me a while to get the hang of it when I first wore my Oura Ring since I was not a ring wearer before. Meanwhile, Garmin Fenix 7 comes with various bands that fit every type of wearer.

Oura Ring 3 vs. Garmin Fenix 7: Which Should You Choose?

Oura Ring 3 and Garmin Fenix 7 are both incredible wearables that can help you achieve your health and fitness goals. But which is better?

Comparing the two devices is doing us a disservice. Although they share a lot in common, Oura Ring 3 and Garmin Fenix 7 don’t quite match up.
