New details about the Galaxy Ring have surfaced with Samsung reportedly planning to release its first-ever smart ring in the third quarter. While the company has not revealed the wearable device’s complete set of features, we’ve got some important information pertaining to the battery life and the first batch of release of the ring.

Samsung Galaxy Ring Battery Life

Battery life may not be the first thing you want to know about a new wearable, but the Galaxy Ring is worth noting as it’s by far the best among smart rings on the market. Most smart rings like the Oura Ring and the Ultrahuman Ring Air can only last up to 7 days and 6 days, respectively. Meanwhile, the Galaxy Ring is expected to last up to 9 days, making it the most long-last of all health rings available.

Samsung Galaxy Ring Units

Smart rings have never seen this level of hype until Samsung announced the Galaxy Ring. It’s been an Oura Ring killer considering the South Korean tech giant’s influence in the tech space. According to insiders, Samsung is gearing up for its first batch of 400,000 units of the Galaxy Ring. There will be nine sizes to choose from.

Samsung Galaxy Ring Release Date

According to recent reports, the Galaxy Ring specs and price will be unveiled in July in time for Samsung’s Unpacked event wherein the Galaxy Z Fold 6 will also be revealed. The release is expected to commence in August, one month after the full official launch of the smart ring and Samsung’s lineup of foldable smartphones.

In 2023, Samsung announced the Fold and Flip smartphones on July 26 and started releasing them on August 11. In 2024, these dates coincide with the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, so the company had to make adjustments to the date. Nevertheless, Samsung is a principal sponsor of the Olympic Games, so we can expect its Team Samsung athletes to be rocking the newly launched smart ring at the Olympic Games.

We are getting closer to the release of the Galaxy Ring as Samsung once again introduced the smart ring at the 2024 Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona. And this time, we are getting more details into the device. If you’re looking forward to the ring’s release, here are some of the latest details we know:

Galaxy Ring Design

The first thing that stands out when you look at the Galaxy Ring is its design which is unlike any other smart ring. The shell is arched in, resembling the rim of a wheel.

The Galaxy Ring has not been allowed to be touched by the public as of now, so we can’t be certain how light and comfortable it is to wear. Nevertheless, Samsung assured the press that the ring is light and easy to wear at any time of day.

Galaxy Ring Colors

The Galaxy Ring was revealed in three colors: ceramic black, platinum silver, and gold. However, we believe there might be more colors available soon. Whichever color you pick, the ring has a glossy finish. Based on what we’ve seen so far, it looks pretty but picks up smudges easily.

Galaxy Ring Sizing

Like most smart rings, the Galaxy Ring will be available in US ring sizes 5 to 13. The size of the ring will be etched on the inner molding of the ring.

Galaxy Health

While the Galaxy Ring looks like a promising health-tracking device, one thing you need to know right off the bat is that you need a Samsung Galaxy smartphone to take full advantage of all its features. For instance, you need the Samsung Health app in order for you to view your health data and insights, and this app is only available on the Galaxy line of smartphones. That said, we can only conclude that the Galaxy Ring is designed as a companion for the Galaxy Watch.

You can also set goals and receive feedback on your progress via Booster Cards on the Galaxy Health app.

Vitality Score

Users will get a Vitality Score, the same metric used in the newer Galaxy Watch series. This is based on a combination of metrics related to sleep, resting heart rate (RHR), heart rate variability (HRV), and activities.

What to Expect

There’s no word from Samsung as of now as to which sensors the smart ring will have. Nevertheless, we know the Galaxy Ring will be used for sleep tracking, heart rate monitoring, respiration monitoring, and activity tracking. Samsung will zero in on detecting early signs of sleep apnea, which many health rings on the market such as Oura Ring and Ultrahuman Ring Air can do.

With these details, we are certain the ring will have infrared photoplethysmography sensors (PPG) for heart rate and breathing rate, a negative temperature coefficient (NTC) sensor for body temperature monitoring, and a 3D accelerometer for monitoring movements.

As for the official release date, we don’t have a clear timeline yet, but we suspect it’s going to be available in the second half of 2024.

Samsung Galaxy Ring
Samsung Galaxy Ring is a health smart ring powered by Galaxy AI.

We’ve seen it—the Samsung Galaxy Ring has finally been out. Well, not out on the shelves for us to grab, but for us to get a taste that the South Korean tech giant is indeed working on something we’ve been waiting for—a smart ring.

Although we didn’t get much from the January 2024 Galaxy Unpacked event, we kind of have an idea of what the Galaxy Ring is all about. It’s a health ring with a big boost from its Galaxy AI, which the company has been pushing for all of its mobile devices and wearables. While AI is nothing new now, especially when it comes to smartphones, it has a critical function for a tiny smart ring.

When will Samsung release the Galaxy Ring?

There are no confirmed details yet as to when Samsung plans to release the Galaxy Ring. But based on what we know so far, we can expect a potential official launch in the second half of 2024. Back in September 2023, it was reported that Samsung is planning to release the ring in 2024 after an APK teardown of the Galaxy Wearable app. But we can’t take this bit of information as it is since we barely know anything about the smart ring at this point.

However, Samsung has already teased that it’s focusing on health monitoring with the Galaxy Ring. If it decides to seek medical approval, then a 2024 release might not be possible. Clearances from regulators don’t come fast and easy, usually taking about 12 months to finish, unless Samsung has already done the work prior to teasing the smart ring at the Galaxy Unpacked event. In that case, we might expect the Galaxy Ring to come out later in 2025.

ALSO READ: BEST SMART RINGS FOR SLEEP TRACKING

In the past couple of years, we’ve seen several successful smart ring releases, including the Ultrahuman Ring Air, Ringconn, Evie Ring, and Circular Ring. All of these come from smaller tech companies, so there’s no reason for Samsung not to pull off a successful release of the Galaxy Ring.

What is the expected price of the Samsung Galaxy Ring?

Samsung has not mentioned anything about pricing. But if we look at the current price of health smart rings on the market with almost the same sets of features and functionalities, the Galaxy Ring would most likely be around $250 to $350.

For context, the base price of the leading health smart ring Oura Ring starts at $299, while close competitors Ultrahuman Ring Air and Ringconn./ cost $349 and $279, respectively. On the other hand, the forthcoming Amazfit Helio Ring is expected to cost around $200 to $250.

What features to expect from the Samsung Galaxy Ring?

The Samsung Galaxy Ring is as vague as it gets at this time. The only thing that’s certain at this point is that the Galaxy Ring is a health-monitoring device reinforced with Galaxy AI. That said, there’s so much to expect from this alone.

But if I’m gonna make a guess—the Galaxy Ring will surely be able to track steps, calorie burn, sleep, heart rates, and blood oxygen levels. These metrics are the foundation of most health smart rings available. If Samsung is feeling more advanced, it could throw in stress management, recovery monitoring, and period prediction into the bargain. Take note—all of these things are present in the most popular smart rings.

The integration of Galaxy AI into the smart ring could mean more personalized insights and recommendations into the user’s health data.

ALSO READ: BEST OURA ALTERNATIVES

A feature like haptic feedback for smart alarms and notifications could also be in the works, and as a wild guess, support for Samsung Pay contactless payments might come as a big surprise. However, you need to take this information with a grain of salt as this is the company’s first foray into the smart ring market, so it certainly does not want to miss like Amazon did with its Halo Ring.

Samsung Galaxy Ring is coming soon.

It’s confirmed! After years of speculations and rumors, we are finally getting the Samsung Galaxy Ring soon as the South Korean tech giant officially announced the health-tracking smart ring at the 2024 Galaxy Unpacked event alongside the company’s other upcoming device offerings. If you’re like us who have been waiting for years for Samsung’s first-ever smart ring, here’s everything you need to know so far:

Samsung Galaxy Ring Features and Specs

Nothing much was revealed at the event for the Galaxy Ring aside from a short clip of a smart ring. But one thing is for sure—the Galaxy Ring is a health tracking wearable. Presented by Dr. Matthew Wiggins, Samsung’s clinical research scientist, the smart ring is designed to help users boost their health experience powered by Galaxy AI.

If we are going by the health smart ring segment, the Galaxy Ring should be able to at least track sleep, activities, heart rate, blood oxygen, and body temperature, among other things. Since the ring is coming from a major tech company, we can only expect robust technology inside the ring.

According to Dr. Wiggins, the Samsung Health experience will include the ability to keep tabs on possible sleep apnea symptoms through sleep patterns, blood oxygen changes as well as tracking heart rate alerts during sleep.

Other than that, Dr. Wiggins teased the “My Vitality Score” to measure how good (or bad) your physical and mental state. This feature has been done by Oura, Ultrahuman, Ringconn, and many other health rings. Nevertheless, we are excited to see what Samsung has in store for us.

A patent that Samsung filed in February 2023 revealed that then unnamed Galaxy Ring is “intended to cover the categories of wearable smart devices in the nature of a smart ring for tracking, measuring, monitoring, and uploading health, fitness, and sleep-related information.”

This information alone is very telling what the Galaxy Ring is about, but we suspect there’s more to it than health monitoring. We could also be seeing a Galaxy Ring that controls smart devices.

Samsung Galaxy Ring Release Date and Pricing

As for availability and pricing, no word has been given. We might hear more in later this month as the new Galaxy S24 smartphone starts shipping.

And as for pricing, the Galaxy Ring could be set around $200. Most smart rings on the market cost less than $200, while more popular ones like Oura Ring and Ultrahuman Ring Air cost more than $300.

Oura Ring vs. Samsung Galaxy Watch 6: Features and Functionalities

Let’s dive into the most important health features and functionalities of the Galaxy Watch 6 and Oura Ring.

Samsung Galaxy Watch 6 Review
Samsung Galaxy Watch 6

Activity Tracking

Activity tracking is one of the core functionalities of health wearables. Oura Ring Gen 3 and Galaxy Watch 6 keep tabs on your steps, calorie burn, distance covered, and heart rate during workouts. Oura Ring can track at least 40 unique activities, while the Galaxy Watch 6 can track up to 90 workouts. The Galaxy Watch 6 gives you an option to personalize your heart rate zone and automatically detects workouts if you have been at it for 10 minutes. Oura Ring can automatically detect activities, but its suggestions are way off.

Heart Rate Tracking

Monitoring various heart rate metrics is another core functionality of the Oura Ring Gen 3 and Galaxy Watch 6. These wearables have a bunch of sensors for heart rate tracking, including red and green LEDs and infrared PPG. Heart rate metrics they can monitor include active heart rate (for activity tracking), resting heart rate (for sleep tracking), and heart rate variability (for recovery monitoring).

The good thing about the Galaxy Watch 6 is that it has an alert system for when your heart rate drops abnormally low or climbs too abnormally high. Also, your blood pressure is monitored on a daily basis. This comes in handy for people who want to get better at their lifestyle choices. You can even personalize your HR zone if you have a specific goal. You will be alerted when you enter your target HR zone and as you exit.

Sleep Tracking

Sleep tracking is present for both wearables, tracking your sleep stages (light, REM, and deep sleep) and from the moment you turn in to the moment you fall asleep, wake up, and then leave the bed. Part of your sleep tracking data collected are your resting heart rate (RHR), heart rate variability (HRV), restfulness, and skin temperature.

The good thing about Oura Ring Gen 3 is that it provides you with more in-depth metrics, even providing insights into your tossing and turning. At the end of the day, the Oura Ring is more comfortable to use when sleeping as it’s less bulky than the Galaxy Watch 6. Meanwhile, the Galaxy Watch 6 has Sleep Coaching to guide you through your sleep habits and how you can improve them. Do note that you need to put it on sleep mode to change the PPG sensor’s green LED to an infrared LED, which is additional work, to be honest.

The Outliers

Surprisingly, you cannot find recovery monitoring from the Galaxy Watch 6 despite it being a very common feature among wearable devices. The Oura Ring Gen 3 has it and provides you with a recovery score based on how well (or bad) your body responds to signals and factors like sleep, activities, and HRV. Oura Ring Gen 3 also has period prediction capabilities, allowing women to plan a pregnancy or avoid it, for that matter.

The Galaxy Watch 6 comes with a bunch of nifty features outside health and wellness tracking. One thing I love about it is Samsung Wallet, which allows you to store cards, digital IDs, tickets, and keys, as well as make payments whether it’s public transit or groceries. You can also use the smartwatch to make calls, send SMS, and stream music while your phone is away. Samsung’s smartwatches also have GPS enabled, letting you use Google Maps for navigation. And of course, the Galaxy Watch 6 comes with safety features like fall detection and SOS emergency in case you need emergency help while you are cycling, hiking, or running.

Oura Ring vs. Samsung Galaxy Watch 6: Specs and Design

The Galaxy Watch 6 is one of the most good-looking smartwatches. It has a 1.5-inch Super AMOLED display—the largest screen Samsung smartwatches have. The classic variants have rotating bezels just like mechanical watches. Samsung also boasts that the smartwatch’s processor is 18% faster than its predecessor.

In terms of battery life, each charge lasts up to 40 hours. Each full charge takes 30 minutes to complete. Meanwhile, the Galaxy Watch 6 is certified up to IP68 standards, which means it is water-resistant up to 5 feet for up to 30 minutes. Honestly, this is a bit disappointing considering most smartwatches of its caliber can survive up to 50 meters.

Meanwhile, the Oura Ring Gen 3 is made of titanium and coated with PVD, while the inner shell is made of non-allergenic molding. It weighs 4-6 grams, depending on the size. It is slim, comfortable, and elegant enough to be comfortably worn anytime. In terms of battery, Oura Ring Gen 3 can last up to 7 days, and each full charge takes about 20 to 80 minutes. When it comes to water resistance, both wearables can be used underwater for up to 100 meters. You can swim, shower, and snorkel with it.

The Verdict: Which Wearable Should You Get?

The question as to which wearable is better is actually a misguided question. The Oura Ring Gen 3 and Galaxy Watch 6 are different in a lot of ways. Yes, they share a lot of functionalities in common, but I honestly believe these devices can work together and bring about useful data to help you improve your overall well-being.

If you really need to pick one, I’d look at it this way. Choose Oura Ring if you want to zero in on your sleep and women’s health tracking. If you are looking for an overall wearable that does more than monitor your health, the Galaxy Watch 6 is the better option.

Activity Tracking

The activity tracking of the Galaxy Watch series has come a long way. With the Galaxy Watch 6, you get to track up to 90 workouts and create custom workouts. The smartwatch can also automatically detect workouts if you have been at it for 10 minutes, such as walking, running, cycling, swimming, rowing machine, elliptical trainer, and HIIT. When I started covering the smart ring market in early 2017, the market barely had names that had sensible models. Oura and McLear were probably the two brands that did well and saw significant success. There are some brands I can think of that were up there but had not seen the same level of patronage these smart rings had back then.

Fast forward to date, Oura Ring has come out victorious, developing a cult following that includes celebrities and athletes. Thanks also in large part to the pandemic, this smart ring became instrumental for detecting symptoms of COVID-19.

There’s a lot to be thankful for the Finnish health tech company as this success has proven that smart rings are viable wearables for different use cases. In fact, this has spurred new smart ring makers to join the market, including Ringconn, Ultrahuman, Taspter, Boat, and more.

More smart rings are expected to come out in the following years, including big tech firms like Apple and Samsung. But there are other notable contenders, too. Here’s a list of smart rings to watch out for in the next months and years:

1. Circular Ring

First on our list is the smart ring whose release has long been overdue—the Circular Ring. The French health tech firm has been marketing the smart ring and its promising features for the past 2 years. One that stood out is the smart alarm feature that vibrates to wake you up at what it deems the right time based on your sleep patterns. This is a first among wearables, a bold claim that honestly scares me if it does not work. Into the bargain is a range of health and fitness capabilities like sleep tracking, activity tracking, heart rate monitoring, and recovery management.

Circular also aims to deliver unique features to the smart ring, including alert notifications for calendars, reminders, social media, and more through vibrations. There will also be a smart control functionality to manage your devices straight from your finger.

The Circular Ring costs $229 and will be available in 6-13mm sizes, in black, gold, rose gold, and silver outer shells. Shipping starts in November 2023.

2. Evie Ring

Developed by health tech firm Movano, the Evie Ring is mainly designed for women. Menstrual cycle tracking is the main women’s health feature of the ring, allowing you to understand the timing of your period and ovulation windows, whether you are in your reproductive years, post-menopause, or anywhere in between. And like most smart rings on the market, the Evie Ring also comes with sleep tracking, heart rate monitoring, and activity tracking capabilities.

Movano has not officially announced the price yet, but the Evie Ring is expected to cost around $250 to $270. It will be available in silver, gold, and rose gold finishes.

3. Oura Ring Gen 4

Oura has not yet announced the Oura Ring Gen 4, but it’s expected to release the next-generation Oura Ring very soon. The current model was first released in November 2021, so it’s been 2 years. While details are scarce, the fourth-generation Oura Ring is expected to include contactless payments. If this is the case, Oura Ring Gen 4 will be the most versatile smart ring, something that might change the minds of naysayers. Oura Ring Gen 4 is expected to cost around $350 based on its set of features.

4. Apple Smart Ring

Apple has long been reported to be working on a potential smart ring with its various patent applications in the past several years. Despite that, we have not yet seen anything concrete from Apple, but we are hoping that this product will come to life soon. Its latest patent application, discovered in August 2023, suggests that the Apple smart ring might have haptic notifications, the same feature on Apple Watches. Other than that, there are no reports suggesting the design and what the future smart ring could do.

5. Samsung Galaxy Ring

Unlike Apple, there are many pieces of evidence pointing to Samsung’s efforts to release what’s called the Galaxy Ring. There is no official communication revealing the details of the forthcoming smart ring, but based on the patent applications and trademarks, Samsung could release a remote control smart ring to work with smart TVs, smartphones, and home automation systems.

At the moment, only Circular Ring and Evie Ring have official dates of release. Meanwhile, we can expect Oura to start hinting at the release of its fourth-generation smart ring. As for Apple and Samsung, we can only hope for the best that big tech firms will finally join the smart ring competition.

Looking for the best wearables for sleep? Smart Ring News has carefully selected the 5 Best Smartwatches for Sleep Tracking in 2024.

The introduction of sleep-tracking wearable devices in 2011 has been one of the significant breakthroughs in the health and wellness industry. Over a decade later, we’ve got dozens of sleep trackers on the market—be it in the form of a smart ring, smartwatch, or fitness band.

Brands like Apple, Garmin, and Samsung have incorporated a bunch of different functionalities into one piece of device, such as sleep tracking, heart rate monitoring, activity tracking, and blood oxygen monitoring. These, on top of the basic functionalities of smartwatches, make wrist-worn wearables so easy to sell.

Is Samsung coming out with a smart ring? The questions we’ve all been asking. It’s been quite a while since we first heard about Samsung introducing a new wearable device in the form of a smart ring, but we have yet to hear a confirmation straight from the horse’s mouth. Despite being mum about the allegedly upcoming smart ring, there have already been many pieces of evidence pointing to the new wearable tech.

Samsung Smart Ring Trademarks and Patents

Several trademarks and updates have already been spotted allegedly referring to the South Korean tech giant’s next big thing—the yet-to-be-named Samsung smart ring. The latest piece of information, courtesy of a Reddit user, was found last week through the features list of the latest Samsung Health beta app, version 6.24.1.023, mentioning “ring support.” While this is not a confirmation, this could be an indication of the maker’s long-awaited smart ring.

Last August 22, a new Class 9 trademark for a device was spotted in the UK Intellectual Property Office. The Class 9 classification consists of smart rings and software for smart rings, wearable computers, wearable digital electronic communication devices, and more. One significant detail in the new trademark is the name “Samsung Curio,” which could well be the name of the company’s upcoming smart ring device.

Samsung earlier this year secured the trademark “Galaxy Ring” and applied for the trademarks “Samsung Circle,” “Samsung Index,” and “Samsung Insight” earlier in July 2023. Other names that have reportedly been trademarked include Galaxy Feel, Galaxy Glia, Galaxy One, Galaxy Pulse, and Galaxy Rhythm. It remains a mystery whether we are getting one or multiple smart ring devices, or these names could refer to smart ring features.

In December 2015, Samsung was first reported to have considered making a smart ring accessory through a patent application published by the US Patent and Trademark Office. The smart ring accessory was reportedly designed to control smart TVs, smartphones, and home automation systems. Later, a ring design with a volume rocker, call buttons, and a supposed card slot surfaced online. More interestingly, the ring had sensors believed to monitor a person’s heart rate.

What Does Samsung Galaxy Ring Do?

Nothing has been confirmed yet, but it seems like Samsung Electronics is heading towards health and wellness for its smart ring device. It can be noted that Samsung started working on a smart ring accessory for controlling smart devices. But it didn’t pan out.

Expectedly, Samsung’s latest smart ring venture is centered on sleep and fitness tracking, a first for a major technology company. Samsung’s smart ring might include fitness tracking and heart rate monitoring just like its other wearables. Currently, Oura Ring is the most popular health and wellness smart ring that could directly take on Samsung’s. Other smart ring players include RingConn, Ultrahumann, Circular, and Go2Sleep.

Samsung is likely throwing blood oxygen saturation and ECG monitoring into the mix, which industry leaders have. At this point, if Samsung Electronics launches a smart ring that could take on Oura, it does not make sense to push out a device that does not have Sp02 and ECG monitoring.

If Samsung decides to throw remote control functionalities into the ring, it will likely be with another device. So far, we don’t see Samsung pushing its original smart ring plan to focus on the health and wellness aspects of the device.

Pricing

Expect Samsung’s smart ring to be priced a little lower than the Galaxy Watch 6, whose base price is set at $300. We are looking at $200 to $250 for the Samsung smart ring. It is unlikely that Samsung will go over the Galaxy Watch 6’s price unless the set of features the smart ring comes with is compelling enough (when I say compelling, I mean features we have not seen yet).

To put this in perspective, the base models of Oura Ring and Ultrahuman cost $300, while RingConn costs $150. If we are getting the same set of features, that is sleep tracking, fitness tracking, heart rate monitoring, recovery monitoring, blood oxygen monitoring, and ECG, then Samsung is likely to peg its smart ring around this price point as well.

Release Date

It’s difficult to tell whether Samsung is ready to release its smart ring when all we see are patents and trademarks. However, reports suggest that the big tech firm could be introducing its forthcoming wearable in January or February 2024 at the Galaxy Unpacked event. I doubt this is the case, considering the recent developments regarding the device. If no official announcement comes by then, we might finally get concrete answers at the event soon.
