Ring 211 January 2017 Report

Jeff Brodrick presented the January workshop. Jeff spent a lengthy time residing in Scranton, Pennsylvania and talked about his friends Dorothy Dietrich and Dick Brookz who operate the Houdini Museum there. He talked about the museum which is located in a one hundred year-old house and is full of Houdini artifacts and collectibles. He also mentioned that they are creating the board game “Houdini-oploy.” There is a kickstarter campaign. For information one should visit http://houdiniopoly.com/. This will link to the kickstarter campaign for those interested in purchasing. One can even have their own name (or magic club) on the board. Then he showed us two video clips. One was the “Relatively Speaking Game Show” from 1988. In this Harry Blackstone was a contestant and did his Vanishing Bird & Cage. In that episode he won a set of golf clubs. He never told Gay. She was wondering why he had a set in the garage when the garage was being cleaned after his death in 1997. Fortunately, Jeff was able to give her a copy of this video program which explained why. He also showed us a video clip of Sid Caesar as Hocus Von Pocus with Carl Reiner in “Your Shows of Shows,” circa 1951. Thank you Jeff.

Tonight’s program was “May The Force Be With You.” Each performer had to perform a trick or routine involving some sort of force. Randy Baker, our emcee, opened the show with what he called a “cosmic trivia concept.” He was able to magically reveal the thought of a three letter word from a spectator among many. Gil Scott was able to reveal a spectator’s card, a World Poker Tour Card. He also performed a book test in which the end result was his book was all blank. He concluded with three card selections in which he revealed all three. Jeff Brodrick had a person select a card and we saw Ginger from “Gilligan’s Island” reveal the card on the large screen. Randy Vander Wal performed a card silk prediction routine. Dr. Jack Vander Wal followed with a card selection routine in which the revealed card had written on its back the exact dollar amount and change in his wallet. P. J. Weber impressed us with three card selections and revelations. Jim Parkes astonished us with his version of the Mental Choice Card. Gary Oisten amazed us with his card selection and find which involved various cuts, shuffles, and called out numbers.

Another night of magic and fun! Thanks to the performers and all who were here. Michigan Magic Day is Saturday, May 20, at Grace Bible College, here in Grand Rapids. There is also a Friday Night Before Party. All details at michiganmagicday.com and on our club’s web site.
